K–5: Everyday Mathematics
We use a research-informed, spiraled approach that promotes conceptual understanding, problem solving, and flexible use of numbers through hands-on routines, games, and integrated home links. Students learn multiple strategies, deepen knowledge over time, and connect math to their everyday lives.

Core philosophy:
Everyday Mathematics shifts focus from drill-based calculation to building conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills across arithmetic, geometry, data, probability, algebra, and functions. It always aims to connect math with real life, preview new topics, and reinforce past learning. Key instructional features:

• Daily routines like Math Messages, Math Boxes, mental math, and Home Links create consistent practice and strengthen number sense.
• Flexible strategies: Students learn alternative algorithms alongside standard ones, developing number flexibility and reasoning. Calculators are used purposefully for exploration, not just speed.
• Spiraled learning: Concepts return across years and grades, allowing understanding to deepen over time.
• Games and collaboration: Learning is social and interactive—games, rich activities, and group work make practice engaging and build fact fluency.
   

What parents and the community should know:

• The curriculum invites families to be part of the learning through Home Links and varied experiences, making math learning visible and approachable.
• It has a solid research base and generally positive outcomes.

Math becomes purposeful and student-driven in grades 6-8. Lessons engage curiosity with real-world problems and scaffold thinking through a structured progression. Teachers use powerful tools to spot student thinking in real time and personalize learning through adaptive supports and rich discussions.

• Proficiency Progression™: Lessons lead students naturally from prior knowledge to grade-level concepts with clear, scaffolded instructional moves.
• Problem-based and engaging: Students grapple with real-world, relevant contexts—like stories, data, and scenarios that make sense to them—fueling engagement and meaningful discussion.
• Digital and print integration: Lessons include interactive digital experiences (powered by Desmos technology) plus print materials. Teachers get real-time insight into student thinking and can easily support or extend learning.
